About Guy Standing

Guy Standing (born 9 February 1948) is a British labour economist. He is a professor of development studies at SOAS University of London and the University of London. Standing co-founded the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN) in 1986 and has written widely in the areas of labour economics, active labour market policies, unemployment, labour market flexibility, structural adjustment programs and social protection. Standing created the term "precariat" to describe an emerging class of workers who are harmed by low wages and poor job security as a consequence of globalisation. Since the 2011 publication of his book The Precariat: The New Dangerous Class, his work has focused on the precariat, deliberative democracy, commons, and has become a major advocate of universal basic income. Standing was elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2009 and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2019.
