Luigi Nicholas Mangione ( MAN-jee-OH-nee; born May 6, 1998) is an American man accused of killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Thompson was shot and killed in New York City on December 4, 2024. Following a nationwide manhunt, Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the shooting. He was indicted on eleven New York state charges and four federal charges, including first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, criminal possession of a weapon, and stalking. In September 2025, a New York state judge dismissed Mangione's two terror-related murder charges; he still faces a charge of second-degree murder. Federal prosecutors initially sought the death penalty in Mangione's federal case until a New York district judge dismissed two charges against Mangione in January 2026—the firearms charge and the federal murder charge—that carried the possibility of the death penalty. Since his arrest, Mangione has received significant public attention. According to a YouGov poll conducted shortly after the arrest, Americans on average are more likely to view Mangione unfavorably than favorably; however, Americans under 30 are more likely to view him favorably than unfavorably. Mangione has drawn international support through graffiti, social media, and local court hearings, transforming him into a folk hero for those critical of the U.S. health insurance industry and its claim denial practices.
